Pic 1 I love watching tv shows and movies on Dvds. I love the control it gives me to watch them when I want, to fast forward the parts I don't like and rewatch the parts I love. I much prefer to watch a show or movie on dvd then cable or satellite. This is particularly true for tv shows, especially dramas. This preference has lead me to investigate the best (most convenient, cost effective, easiest and flexible) way to rent dvds.

There are two major and one indepentdent online dvd rental sites. Most have heard of the two major - Blockbuster and netflix - online dvd rental sites. Both sites have strengths and weaknessess. Their fees are fairly similiar and not a major decision factor. There are to my mind 3 deciding factors.

1. Do you live near a Blockbuster store? If you so, you probably want to join Blockbuster because of a feature called total access. This feature allows you to return your dvds in the store and to receive free in store rentals in exchange. This feature is worthless, of course, if you do not live near a Blockbuster store.

2. Mailing time. Both sites have a large number of mailing centers. Both have facilities in most major metropolitian areas. In some case though one will have a mailing center significantly closer and this can greatly effect the speed at which you exchange your dvds. If it takes 3 days for your dvd to get back to the source and 3 days for the new to arrive, it means a six day turn around on a dvd versus 3 or 4 if the mailing center is close. 3. Selection. Both have a broad selection. Though each has some (more obscure movie and show) titles the other is missing.

Pic 2 I still remember vinly, lps and 45s (and of course everyone all time favorite 8track tapes). Part of me even misses them. The rest of me appreciates the sound quality of the digital age and the convencience of the digital age. Albums warped and scratched easily. They were bulky and tempermental. I mean no one took the phonograph when they went jogging. I love the ability to buy a single track, to buy it now and to buy it from home at 2 in the morning.
